New Album Release - Jazz Lullaby

I'm excited to announce the release of a new album:  Jazz Lullaby, a collection of children's lullabies performed by a top notch New York Jazz Trio featuring Neal Miner on bass and Fukushi Tainaka on drums. I'm hoping these songs will be useful to parents who want to help their kids sleep or relax while also exposing them to actual quality music, and also to adults themselves looking for music that puts them at ease. You can listen to it on all the major streaming services, or you can download WAV or MP3 versions below with a pay-what-you-wish option. Thanks for the support, hope you enjoy the music!

Here's a clip from one of my recent instructional videos on my Patreon channel. In this video we're checking out the tune Beautiful Friendship, with a particular look at improvising using whole tone scales over dominant chords. Congratulations to the amazingly talented Samara Joy on her double Grammy wins this past weekend!  I'm proud to have performed on her recording "Linger Awhile" which won for Best Jazz Vocal Album.  If you haven't heart her yet check her out!

New Course Available!

I'm excited to announce that my latest course on Enclosures and Approach Notes is now available for download. It contains 3 hours of video instruction on how to build your own melodic and compelling solos without memorizing endless scales or modes.  Enclosures like these are how I first learned to improvise, and I still use ideas from this system in every solo that I play.  Click on the Courses tab for more information, or check out the YouTube video below for a preview.

In this 3 hour video course, Ben presents a system of improvisation based on chord tone enclosures and approach notes. Using ideas of tension and release, this system provides a method of honestly and effectively dealing with all the main chord types we come across in Jazz, demonstrating in detail how to create melodic and compelling solos without memorizing endless scales or modes. Complete with full chorus examples of solos over popular Jazz progressions, Ben takes you through the use of these approach-note ideas step-by-step, detailing his thought process at every point, and demonstrating how you can construct hip and varied melodic lines of your own, all for less than the cost of one lesson. 'Enclosures like these are how I first learned to improvise back when I was first taking Jazz lessons in high school, and I still used ideas, phrases and concepts from this system in every single solo that I play.' - Ben
